Wilhelm Wundt Essay Example for Free

Wilhelm Wundt Essay Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt conceived on August sixteenth, 1832 in the German State of Baden was a scholar, doctor, teacher and clinician, and is considered by numerous individuals as the â€Å"founder of current psychology† or the â€Å"father of test psychology†. His commitment to brain research on an entire is noted well among present day analysts; be that as it may, his naming henceforth commitment to brain science as a science has recognized him from numerous other conspicuous figures in the space of brain science. He built up the main lab submitted only to mental research at the University in Leipzig, extended exploratory brain science as a set up way of thinking, built up the technique for reflection which turned into the premise of the cutting edge logical strategy, composed books and volumes of diaries which diverted the spread of trial brain research, and impacted various ways of thinking, for example, structuralism and voluntarism. These were the significant aftereffects of his endeavors to seek after the investigation of human conduct in a methodical and logical way and his objective to build up brain research as a one of a kind clear cut science. Wundt, brought up in a rural area called Neckarau, was the child of a Lutheran clergyman and experienced childhood in a situation where there were numerous researchers and erudite people as the two his parents’ families were comprised of insightful people, for example, students of history, scholars, doctors and researchers. He in this way had a contemplative youth and his training turned out to be exclusively the duty of his father’s collaborator. His proper instruction started at the University of Tubingen, in any case, in the wake of remaining for only one year he moved to the University of Heidelberg where he got one of the top clinical understudies in his group, graduated summa cum laude, and put first in the state clinical board assessment (B. R. Hergenhahn, 2009). In the wake of graduating with his clinical degree, he went on to the University of Berlin where he went through a year and after came back to Heidelberg where he turned into the lab aide of well known physiologist Hermann Ludwig von Helmholtz. It was during this residency with von Helmholtz that Wundt started to build up his hypothesis that brain research was a characteristic science. This affected him to give addresses on his logical way to deal with brain research and compose his first book called Contributions to the Theory of Sensory Perception which basically made ready for his excursion in demonstrating brain science to be a science. Wundt stayed at Heidelberg until 1874 when he persuaded a proposal to be a Professor of inductive way of thinking at Zurich University in Switzerland. In the wake of remaining there for a year he got an arrangement to show theory at the University of Leipzig back home in Germany which he acknowledged and remained until his passing in 1920. The logical methodology by Wundt had before long come to be known as ‘Wundtian psychology’ due to its distinction based on what is was known as before him. The foundations of brain science are very antiquated and are in certainty gone back a very long time to the early Greeks, for example, Aristotle and Hippocrates who had differentiating perspectives on whether the heart or the cerebrum was the seat of the psyche. Glassman Hadad (2009) accepted that for the most part brain research rose up out of two customs: theory and the regular science. Logicians were constantly keen on understanding the importance of human experience and recognition. This intrigue started a few investigations which â€Å"set the phase for the improvement of technical disciplines, including brain research, through their dependence on perception as a methods for knowing their world† (Kasschau, 2003, p. 15). One such rationalist was John Locke who demonstrated his enthusiasm for thinking the job of learning in conduct when he composed his Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which was distributed in 1690. Seventeenth century rationalists had presented and promoted the possibility of dualism, the idea that the brain and body are independent and particular. Another popular logician Rene Descartes concurred with this thought; anyway he indicated that there was still some association among brain and body. He had an unthinking perspective on a human conduct and contemplated that the brain and body impact each other to make a person’s encounters. He considered the to be as controlling the body’s developments, sensations, and discernments. The logical interests of brain research can likewise be gone back a great many years with doctors, for example, Galen and Hippocrates who pushed their perspectives on cerebrum work. One researcher who insistently impacted brain research was Isaac Newton. His work in material science assisted with building up a logical ‘method’ â€Å"consisting of perception, the definition of theories intended to foresee occasions and results and the ensuing testing of these speculations through further observation† (Watts, 2010). These components stay fundamental to the logical strategy that is commonly utilized in brain research. Likewise having incredible effect on brain research was Newton’s utilization of those strategies and his hypothesis of mechanical determinism. It was along these lines accepted that sciences, for example, science, science, material science and physiology had affected parts of brain research. Essentially brain science was a blend or half and half of various logical fields and theory and was not seen as an unmistakable science. Logicians, for example, Galileo, August Comte and Immanuel Kant dismissed brain research as a science since they accepted that it was outside the domain of science. Comte is noted broadly for his prohibition of brain science from the characterization of sciences which he expounded on in one of his celebrated works Course of Positive Philosophy. John Stuart Mill, who was profoundly impacted by and respected by Comte and his compositions, couldn't help contradicting this prohibition. Plant voiced his protest of this prohibition and was of the sentiment that brain research could turn into a science which he expressed in his System of Logic in 1843; notwithstanding, it required somebody with the grant and information on how perception and investigations are made. In spite of the fact that Mill was of this position he didn't venture to attempt to accomplish this objective and just discussed doing mental examinations; however Wundt assumed up the liability and really did them. Consequently it was in the late 1800s and mid 1900s that was when brain science split away from reasoning and turned into a different field of study (Plotnik Kouyoumdjian, 2011). Wundt accepted that experimentation could be utilized to concentrate just the basic procedures of the brain yet couldn't be utilized to consider the more intricate mental procedures; anyway he proposed that it could help in the comprehension of the higher mental procedures. George A. Mill operator (1998) states that â€Å"For Wundt, brain research included the examination of awareness into components, the assurance of the way wherein these components are associated, and the assurance of the laws of association. This origination he obtained from the British empiricists. Similarly as scientists had broke down issue into iotas and anatomists had dissected living frameworks into cells, clinicians, he chose, must break down psyche into the rudimentary sensations and sentiments that make it up†.

The Welfare Of Society During The 1920 S - 2016 Words

In the United States during the 1920’s, the welfare of society was in jeopardy due to the number of feebleminded. With such a high number, the risk that these undesired genes would be passed on to future generations of offspring was a leading concern for scientific figures of the time. Whether or not this statement was actually the case, it was widely believed at the time. It was felt that the only logical way to ensure a better future for the rest of society was to segregate this class of impaired citizens apart from others. Sterilization, which was supported by many, became the best known solution to this rising problem during this time period (Cynkar 1981). Buck vs Bell is an example of the fight against sterilization laws that ultimately made its way to the United States Supreme Court. Many states had eugenic laws that were in force long before the Supreme Court case, but revisions were made after the ruling of Buck vs. Bell (Nourse 2016). Historically, this court case rested on many issues that were seen as acceptable at the time, but by today’s standards are considered consciously wrong. The majority opinion regarding the legalization for sterilization from the iconic court case Buck vs. Bell still remains in effect today, but the misrepresentation of constitutional rights and ethical questions posed by this case are altogether still a question that remains up for debate. Now a day it is important to take into consideration effective strategies so that the organization can easily accomplish the goals and can attract more consumers. There are many rights that are available for the consumers and also which provides safety and security in doing online transactions. The consumers are protected by the unfair trade practices that are prevailing in the market. By taking into consideration movement of consumers it is seen that it consist of voluntary and democratic movement. In this the movement is for the consumers, by the consumers and of the consumers. The consumers have the right to sue any organization that conduct unfair trade practices (Goh, Heng and Lin, 2013). Social media has given a major advancement in promoting new products in the market. In the recent scenario, it is very easy for the company to promote its product in the market. Social media offers a great platform for the consumers to communicate globally. It is seen that with the use of online sources the consumers get knowledge and reviews about the product. Customers can share their views and experience by taking into consideration the social media channels. The consumer movement gives enhancement in the economy and also helps to enhance the level of satisfaction of the customers (Papadopoulos and Heslop, 2014). The companies that are engaged in online trading should give main emphasis on the security and protection of the consumers. Trust is considered as an important factor at the time of online shopping. So if the customers do not have safety or security then it can give negative impact on the sales of the company. There are many rights that are available for the consumers like right to be informed, right to safety. Decisions making of the customers are based on the behavioral actions and environmental factors. Sometimes there are many situations in which the consumer faces many problems to take the correct decisions. It is seen that the pre purchase and post purchase decision making process is very difficult for the consumers (Labrecque, 2014). Pre- purchase behavior is when the consumer wants some product or the need for the product arises. If the need and requirement of the consumer arises, then it seen that they search for the product. To make the correct decision the consumers search the information of the product. The product brands, variations and the quality are taken into consideration. The information of the product is collected by considering the age, gender and also the price. The consumer buying decision depends upon the price of the product. If the product is of low price then it is seen that consumer put little efforts to buy the product. The information of the product can be taken by the consumer from the internet sources or by searching in the market (Claiborne and Sirgy, 2015). There are various activities that are taken into consideration by the consumers. There are specific, ongoing and incidental activities on which the consumers give main emphasis. The specific activities are related with the problems a nd also proper assistance is required. In the ongoing activity the consumer search for a particular time period and then they take proper decision to buy the product. There are many social media which are popular like Goggle, Facebook and Instagram. The social media is a platform which is very useful and provides profitability to the organization. The company promotes its products by showcasing the items on the different social media pages. By seeing those images the customers get induced to buy the product. Social media helps the company to popularize their product and also to enhance the goodwill in the market. It is analyzed that if the customer is satisfied with the product, then they will tell to more people about the product, by this the company can grow its operations in an effective manner (Balladares,Llull, Miralles and Kennett,2016). Social media is considered as the most cost efficient digital method that enhances the business viability. If the company implements the social media strategies then it can be easy to implement the brand recognition of the product. If the company do not promote its product on social media then it will be very difficult to attain the objectives. There are many platforms that are available for the consumer to buy a product. One of the most popular platforms is the social media in which the customer can access to the product by sitting anywhere. Online shopping has been a most popular method that is used by the consumer to purchase the product (Castronovo and Huang, 2012). After various investigations it is analyzed that social media provides various opportunities to the organization. It is a great platform from which the company interacts with mass of customers in an effective manner. By accessing to social media the customer can search the information about the product and also helps the customer to offer variety of products. There are many discounts and offers that are given by the company (Solomon, 2014). It is the best technique that is adopted to attract the customer towards the product. E- Commerce is also a method by which the consumer gets the knowledge about the product that is offered by the company. The company also gives many offers that make the customer aware about the new product in the market. The social media channels enhance the awareness about the product and services globally. It is considered as an effective source or a platform through which large audience can be covered (Armstrong, Kotler, Harker and Brennan, 2015). Sometimes there are many issues that take place in relation with the social media. The social media do not provide accurate information about the product. It is a great drawback for the company, as it misleads the consumers. If the information that is provided is not correct, then the negative impact can be seen on the goodwill of the organization. Social media channel helps to maintain the effective relationship between the organization and consumers. It is a great platform of networking and communication. To enhance the company image it is very essential to popularize the product on social media sites or channels (Campbell, Ferraro and Sands, 2014). By taking into consideration it is seen that social media assist the consumers to take correct decisions regarding the pre purchase and post purchase behavior. The company should try to enhance the level of satisfaction of the consumers, so that the goals and objectives can be attained in effective manner. Social media is a platform that enhances the goodwill of the organization and also promotes the product in the market. The companies should also conduct some awareness campaigns so that the consumer can become aware about the product (Vinerean, Cetina, Dumitrescu and Tichindelean, 2013). By taking all this into consideration, it is seen that social media plays a great role in todays scenario. Theme Of A Dolls House Essays - Films, A Dolls House,

Theme Of A Doll's House Henrik Ibsen's, A Doll's House is definitely a unique story written by a very intelligent, complicated writer. I believe he intentionally wrote the play in a manner which would lead every reader to draw his own conclusions. He forces us to find our own interpretation of the play in context with our personal lives and experiences with the opposite sex. The theme may be interpreted by many as a study of the moral laws that men and women are required to follow by nature. I believe it is primarily based on the gender stereotypes that determine the role of women in society. During the time in which the play took place, society frowned upon women asserting themselves. Women were expected to play a role in which they supported their husbands, took care of their children, and made sure the house was in perfect order. In Act I, there are many clues that hint at the kind of marriage Nora and Torvald have. It seems that Nora is like a doll controlled by Torvald. She relies on him for everything, from her movements to thoughts, much like a puppet who is dependent on its puppet master for all of its actions. In the beginning of the play, Nora did enact the stereotypical role, which she felt she was required to do. In once instance, Torvald feels that he must reteach Nora how to dance the tarantella. Nora of course pretends that she needs him to teach her every move in order to relearn the dance. In truth, this is an act and proves her submissiveness to her husband. Once he is finished teaching her the dance he proclaims, When I saw you turn and sway in the tara ntella, my blood was pounding till I couldnt stand it showing that he is more interested in Nora physically than emotionally. Nora responds to his remark saying, Go away, Torvald! Leave me alone. I dont want all this. Torvald asks, Arent I your husband? implying that one of Noras duties as his wife is to physically please him at his command. Torvald also does not trust Nora with money, which exemplifies Torvald's treating Nora as a child. On the rare occasion when Torvald gives Nora some money, he is concerned that she will waste it on candy and pastry. In general, Noras duties are restricted to playing with the children, doing little housework, and working on her needlepoint. A problem with her responsibilities is that her most important obligation is to please Torvald, making her role similar to that of a slave. Torvald easily talks down to Nora saying things like: worries that you couldnt possible help me with, Nora, Nora, just like a woman, and Maynt I look at my dearest treasure? At all the beauty that belongs to no one but methats my very own? as if she is considered his property. However, Nora does eventually realize that she has been treated like a child all her life and has been denied the right to think and act the way she wishes. When Torvald does not immediately offer to help Nora after Krogstad threatens to expose her, Nora realizes that there is a problem. By waiting until after he discovers that his social status will suffer no harm, Torvald reveals his true feelings; that place appearance, both social and physical, before the wife which he supposedly loves. This revelation is what prompts Nora to walk out on Torvald. When Torvald tries to reconcile with Nora, she explains to him how she had been treated like a child all her life; her father had treated her much the same way Torvald does. Both male superiority figures not only denied her the right to think and act the way she wished, but limited her happiness. Nora describes her feelings as always merry, never happy. When Nora finally slams the door and leaves, she is not only slamming it on Torvald, but also on everything else that has happened in her past which curtailed her growth into a mature woman English Essays

Peer to Peer Assessment Strategy for Groups

Peer to Peer Assessment Strategy for Groups Group work is a great strategy to use in the secondary classroom in order to to improve student learning.  But group work sometimes requires a form of problem solving on its own. While the goal in these classroom collaborations is to equally distribute the work to solve a problem or produce a product, there maybe a student (or two) who does not contribute as much as the other members of the group. This student may let his or her fellow students do the bulk of the work, and this student may even share the group grade. This student is the  slacker  in the group, a member who can frustrate the other members of the group. This is especially a problem if the some of the group work is done outside the classroom. So what can a teacher do about assessing this slacker student who does not collaborate with others or who contributes little to the finished product? How can a teacher be fair and award the appropriate grade to those members of a group who have worked effectively? Is equal participation in group work even possible?   The Reasons for Using Group Work in Class While these concerns might make a teacher think about giving up group work entirely, there are still powerful reasons for using groups in class: Students take ownership of the subject matter.Students develop communication and teamwork skills.Students work together and teach each other.   Students can bring   individual skill sets  to a group.Students learn to plan more effectively and manage their time. Here is one more reason to use groups Students can learn to how to assess their work and the work of others. At the secondary level, the success of group work can be measured in many different ways, but the most common is through a grade or points. Instead of having the teacher determine how a groups participation or project will be scored, teachers can grade the project as a whole and then turn the individual participant grades over to the group as a lesson in negotiation. Turning this responsibility over to the students can address the problem of grading the slacker in the group by having student peers distribute points based on the evidence of work contributed. Designing the Point or Grade System: If the teacher chooses to use peer to peer grade distribution, the teacher must be clear that the project under review will be graded to meet standards outlined in a rubric. The total number of points available for the completed project, however, would be based on the number of people in each group. For example, the top score (or an A) awarded to a student for a project or participation that meets the highest standard could be set at 50 points. If there are 4 students in the group, the project would be worth 200 points (4 students X 50 points each). If there are 3 students in the group,   the project would be worth 150 points  (3 students X 50 points each). If there are 2 members of the group,   the project would be worth 100 points  (2 students X 50 points each). Peer to Peer Grading and Student Negotiation Each student would be be awarded points using the following formula: 1. The teacher would first grade the project  as anA or B or C, etc.   based on the criteria established in the rubric. 2. The teacher would convert that grade into its numerical equivalent:   For example, the teacher may determine that the project should be awarded  the equivalent of a B: If the project had four students and was worth 200 points, the project would receive 172  points;     if the project had three students and was worth 150 points, the project would receive  130 points; if the project had two students and was worth 100 points, the project would be awarded 86 points. 3.   After the project receives a grade from the teacher, the students in the group would negotiate on how to divide these points for a grade. Each student must have evidence of what he or she did to  earn points.  Students   could equitably divide the points:   172 points (4 students) or130 points (3 students) or 86 points (two students) If all students worked equally and have the evidence to show they should all get the same grade, then each student would receive 43   points out of the original 50 points available.  Each student would receive an 86%. However,  in the group of three students, if two students have the evidence that that they did the bulk of the work, they could negotiate for more points.   They could negotiate for 48 points each (96%) and leave the  slacker with 34 points (68%).   4. Students confer with the teacher for the distribution of points supported by evidence. Results of Peer to Peer Grading Having students participate in how they are graded makes the assessment process transparent. In these negotiations, all students are responsible for providing evidence of the work they did in completing the project.   Peer to peer assessment can be a motivating experience. When teachers may not be able to motivate students, this form of peer pressure may get the desired results. It is recommended that the negotiations for awarding points be supervised by the teacher to ensure fairness. The teacher can retain the ability to override a groups decision. Using this strategy can provide students an opportunity advocate for themselves, a real world skill they will need after they leave school.

Chinas Position in the Global Nuclear Industry Dissertation

Chinas Position in the Global Nuclear Industry - Dissertation Example From this paper it is clear that some of the country’s corporations have supplied nuclear parts in the construction of the US nuclear plants and even engaged in contractual activities in the field. China’s growth at home has made it a trustworthy partner in international co-operations regarding nuclear energy. More so, china’s growing influencing can be attributed to the idiosyncrasies of its manufacturing eco-system that largely affect supply chains in nuclear power. Chinese policy on nuclear power has always focused on the importation of nuclear power as a way of going global, and this substantially influences its position in the global nuclear power. This study discusses that  the commitment of the Chinese in becoming a global nuclear powerhouse is evident in the construction of new reactors, and international co-operations that help the country stamp its international presence. Even as its global presence and nuclear output increases, the country was not alw ays inclined to nuclear initiatives. Before the 1980s, China was opposed to any nuclear engagements even when neighbors and allies seemed to be going the nuclear way. The opening up of China to world markets and international organizations in the late 80s saw it slowly embrace nuclear initiatives.  China joined organizations involved in the regulation of nuclear energy such as the Conference on Disarmament (CD), and it was able to mimic nuclear policies from other nations.

Multinational Enterprise Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Multinational Enterprise - Essay Example The organisation is known for daily output of 2 million barrels of petrochemical products (Luong and Sierra, 2013). The discussion will analyse the base of Petrobras, Brazil, as an emerging market while evaluating different emerging market multinational. The study will illustrate the internationalization path of the company. It will also detail various business concept and internationalization theories to evaluate the internationalization strategies of Petrobras. Emerging-market multinationals (EMMs) are the enterprises which are based in an emerging market and have operations in other countries as well. Emerging markets are the countries which have demonstrated some traits of developed countries but cannot be referred as fully developed country (Subramaniam, et al., 2015). Emerging market consists of all the newly industrialized economies of Asia as well as other developing and emerging countries. Most of the EMMs are belong from the leading developing countries like China, Brazil, India and Russia (Accenture, 2008). There are mainly five types of emerging market multinationals such as full-fledged globalizers, regional players, global sources, global sellers and multi-regional niche players (Accenture, 2008). The full-fledged globalizers are the established and old EMMs that have already attained geographic span that is similar to the biggest Western multinationals. Regional players are those organisations which are planning to break out of their domestic market to attain greater scale. These organisations are only concentrating on the neighbouring market due to geographical proximity and cultural affinity. Global sources tend to source internationally while their main focus is the domestic market. Global sellers primarily manufacture in their home country but seek consumers from different geographical locations. The last type

Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power

Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power Do the advantages of using nuclear power outweigh the disadvantages and thus making it a safe and economical method of generating electricity? At this time it is believed that there are far more disadvantages than advantages when it comes to the use of nuclear power. This report will list the advantages and disadvantages and prove that nuclear power is the next stepping stone in technological advancements and a cleaner future. HYPOTHESIS The advantages of utilizing nuclear power will by far demean the disadvantages and therefore prove that it will be beneficial to make use of nuclear power as an energy source. DISCUSSION ADVANTAGES One of the main advantages of nuclear power is that it does not emit a large quantity of green house gases such as CO2 [1] [2] and thus does not contribute to global warming. In turn this allows for a cleaner global environment. As seen in the below diagram, Coal-fired power stations release 5912000 tons of CO2 per year. Nuclear power stations use less than a twenty-fifth of that because they only release 230000 tons of CO2 per year. Therefore in the environmental aspect, nuclear power is safe and beneficial for the world s future. Figure 1: A graph of the CO2 Emission by Each Power Source Another advantage of nuclear power is that it has relatively low costs involved in its production [5]. It yields much more electrical energy for each unit of nuclear fuel (uranium rods) used than the conventional fossil fuel power stations (coal) [1] [2]. Due to this it will also cost less to ascertain the resources needed to produce the same amount of energy as fossil fuels as is made evident in the below graph. This results in nuclear fuel costing much less per kilowatt hour for a consumer than any other method of producing electricity [fig. 2]. Therefore nuclear power will be economically beneficial for the world s electricity consuming population. Figure 2: A graph showing the US Electricity Production Costs for 1995 2008 An organization known as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is in place to ensure that all nuclear power stations and nuclear activity which occur anywhere in the world is done without error which ultimately makes the use of nuclear power a safer option [7]. They implement standards and regulations which must be adhered to by all nuclear facilities [7]. One of their main tasks is to oversee the installation of the nuclear systems and transportation of nuclear materials to insure safety and security [7]. These monitoring protocols allow the usage of nuclear energy to be safe and secure. Over time improved designs have come about for nuclear reactors such as the advanced reactor in Japan which has been operating since 1996 [6]. The major safety feature in this reactor is its passive safety system. In the event of a malfunction, no intervention from an operator is required thus eliminating the chance of a human error [6]. If this type safety feature was to be implemented in all the current and future nuclear reactors, it would significantly enhance the safety of the nuclear plants. There is a variety of safety features for nuclear reactors one of which is the three barriers between the fuel rods and the environment [6]. The fuel rods are in a solid ceramic pellet which forms the first barrier [6]. These pellets are inside a closed zirconium tube, which forms the second barrier [6]. The final barrier is the containment of the fuel rods. They are stored in a steel pressure vessel and this vessel has walls up to 30cm thick therefore preventing all radioactive radiation from escaping. Other than those safety barriers the whole containment structure has one meter thick reinforced concrete walls [6]. Thus in the event of a human error there are provisions in place to minimize the severity of the error. These measures will increase the safety of using nuclear power plants even more. DISADVANTAGES The technology and resources used for producing nuclear power can also be used in malicious activities such as illegal nuclear weapons manufacturing [1]. The IAEA has a security area specifically implemented to eliminate such events. It protects the transport and installations of nuclear substances so that they cannot be used for the above mentioned malicious activities [7]. Therefore this is no longer a major disadvantage of using nuclear power. There is a possibility of a nuclear reactor melting down due to human error or bad maintenance. This will result in environmental destruction and/or human casualties [2]. If a human is exposed to a radioactive substance then it is likely that that person and their future generations could suffer from genetic deformities. In the last 50 years there have only been two serious nuclear catastrophes: The Three Mile Island (1979) and Chernobyl (1986). In the Three Mile Island incident the radiation was contained and there were no subsequent environmental or health problems. There have been ten other meltdowns but they were mostly a part of a military or an experimental reactor and they did not result in any hazards on the reactor s surroundings. The first nuclear power station ever created was at Calder Hall in England [10]. It was created in 1956 and has had no operational problems since [10]. This indicates that nuclear reactors can be very safe and therefore beneficial. One of the requi rements of a nuclear reactor is to ensure that a core meltdown must be restricted to the nuclear plant therefore ensuring the safety of nearby residents and the environment. It can thus be deducted that in the event of a reactor meltdown, our safety will not be compromised therefore human or accidental error are not a devastating issue. Terrorism is a huge concern in relation to nuclear reactors especially since the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York [3]. The concern is that a terrorist will crash an airplane in to a nuclear reactor or radioactive waste plant but such nuclear facilities are some of the most terrorist attack resistant infrastructures built [6]. This is because of their robust design (one meter thick walls). Analysts have conducted experiments that have proved that nuclear facilities are terrorist proof. One of the experiments includes using a Boeing 767 and a penetrating missile when testing the strength of facility. Therefore nuclear reactors and radioactive waste facilities are not prone to terrorist attacks. The earth s supply of nuclear fuel (uranium) is very limited and is only expected to last for another 30 to 60 years [2]. Because of the rate of technological developments, it is likely that a new source of electricity will be discovered within 30 to 60 years. With this in mind there is no reason to not use nuclear power in the meantime. A large disadvantage of nuclear power is that it takes about 20 to 30 years to create a nuclear power station (in western democracies) [2]. The planning and building is very time consuming [2]. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it decreases the chances of an error occurring which could have potentially lead to a meltdown accident or any other accidents occurring. This could also increase the quality of the power station s construction which therefore making the nuclear power station safe to use. CONCLUSION As can be seen from the above mentioned points, the use of nuclear power has numerous benefits, both in terms of economics and safety. One cannot deny the disadvantages to using nuclear power but there are solutions available, as showed above, that either negates the disadvantage or minimizes its severity. Therefore the advantages of using nuclear power outweigh the disadvantages by far, which makes nuclear power a safe, secure and economical option for generating of electricity. GLOSSARY Meltdown: When a nuclear reactor core overheats causing the encasement to melt thus allowing radiation to escape. Greenhouse gases: Gases that are produced by most traditional fuel sources which affect the ozone layer and the containment of heat within the Earth s atmosphere. Kilowatt: Is a unit used to measure power and is equal to 1000 watts. Fuel rods: A specialized container used to store nuclear fuel. Human error: An error which has occurred due to the incorrect intervention of human(s).

Art Analysis: Claude Monets Water Lilies :: Claude Monet Visual Art Painting Essays Papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Have you ever looked at a pond and squinted your eyes? Well if you have you would know exactly how Claude Monet felt. Around the time of this painting Monet was losing his eyesight. It seems to me that this painting was actually meant to be realistic, Monet just painted what he saw, how he saw it. It's kind of weird how he achieved this fuzzy look, he doesn't use any real hard edges on any of the forms, but they aren't really faded that much either, It could just be the use of alike colors (in this case green and blue) which make the edges of the lilies fade into the edge of the water.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One thing I can't figure out is how this painting is balanced so well. The concept of putting all the lilies on the right side would seem to me to weigh that side down. Then once again the alike colors come into play and they just seem to fade into each other when you stand back and look at it as a whole. Then also the flowers at the bottom of the painting are the brightest part of it and since they are in the middle they just even it out by being the most attentive part.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When I first saw this painting I didn?t really see a feeling that Monet was trying to convey. Then I learned that he was loosing his eyesight and went back to look once more. The second time I had ever seen it it gave me the message that as you get older things start to fall apart and get fuzzy. It also seems to be the same message in all the paintings after that , because they seem to get weirder and more abstract. Like he cant even control what's going on in his own life.

Review of the Book Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner

Chris Gardner’s life story is impressive. Despite having never gone to college, and after a period of being homeless, he became a wildly successful stockbroker and wrote his memoir, Pursuit of Happyness. It’s not surprising that Hollywood turned his story into a blockbuster film starring Will Smith. Pursuit of Happyness  tracks this happy, rags-to-riches story, starting in early childhood and including Gardners adult progression through a few different careers. About the Book Chris Gardner went from an impoverished childhood to become a wealthy stockbroker and entrepreneur and managed to juggle single fatherhood before it was culturally accepted. His memoir, Pursuit of Happyness, spends a lot of time recounting that difficult childhood and his transition to the military and to time spent working in medicine. The story picks up more speed two-thirds of the way through when Gardner is living in San Francisco determined to raise his son and succeed as a stockbroker, despite having never gone to college. Gardner’s message can seem inconsistent. On the one hand, he was moved by his own troubled childhood to vow that he would be a good father to his children. On the other hand, a flashy red Ferrari caught his eye one day, prompting him to adopt the goal of becoming a stockbroker in order to earn enough money to buy his own Ferrari. The two goals aren’t incompatible, of course, but Gardner doesn’t mention any tension he may have felt between his selfless love for his son and his more superficial-seeming financial goals. Any self-reflection present in Gardner’s story seems to be mostly the self-reflection of a motivational speaker, which Gardner has become. There is much discussion of working hard to overcome the paucity of other African-Americans on Wall Street, not to mention Gardner’s lack of a college degree. The Pursuit of Happyness makes for an enjoyable story, and an inspiring one, but leaves the reader looking for something more. What Makes the Book Worth Reading (or Not) Chris Gardners story is unique in more ways than one. A child who grew up largely in foster care, he found the tenacity, strength of character, and talent within himself to become extraordinarily successful. A black man growing up in poverty, he built a reputation that turned him into a major motivational speaker for people of all backgrounds. Perhaps most significantly, Gardner is a father (not a mother) who did whatever it took to ensure that his son would grow up in a safe, loving home. If you are struggling against the odds, you may well find reassurance and motivation in Gardners experience. If you dont find motivational biographies inspiring, you may also want to read the book as background before viewing the movie version starring Will Smith. The movie includes only a portion of the full story, and skips or changes some of the details. Both book and movie, however, have similar pros and cons. As with many rags-to-riches stories, the emphasis is on the grit and determination of the individual and not on the systemic issues that placed the individual in a seemingly  impossible situation. Much of Gardners achievement is related, not to relationship-building or self-discovery, but to the ability to find a niche in which he could fit in and make the money he craved. For many people, Gardners story will be inspirational; for others its likely to be frustrating.
